Well, I am back from the St. Louis area and getting ready to start up summer school. I was able to see Kaleb for a few days, and for the record he is not so fond of his favorite aunt. He was away from his momma and daddy for the first time and he would abide no one except his grandpa (and Oliver), which was good news for Grandpa and no one else. He better grow out of this phase, or else!!
I have had about enough of this heat already, and summer hasn't even started yet! Not a good omen, is it? To top it all off, I am now the "proud" owner of a huge repair bill for air conditioner issues. I love autumn and winter so much!!
If anyone is out there, share with me your great, keep-cool summer plans. I would love to hear from you all.
Take care and behave!

You have to be kidding me! You really found proof of our past? I must say, I am quite frightened. It isn't a picture, is it? Middle school was definitely the highest point in my very lengthy awkward phase!
When will you be in Florida? I'm going back at the end of July. Don't get me wrong. It's no Hawaii, but few can be that fabulous!
HELP! I am already hearing, " I know I won't like my new school". I have tried to be encouraging and positive. I have shared your letter with them several times on how it will be a challenge, but a great adventure. This IS NOT FLYING! They are convinced they belong with some of their friends at another school we did not get into. I know this is something they are all going through, but before school was out the other kids had all buddied up according to what middle school they were attending and my child doesn't see any hope of finding friends. As an adult I know this will pass, but how do I get their spirits up to face the likely challenges? Also, did you give grades for the Black History Projects? What are you reading this summer? We had AC issues too, congratutlations!
STAY COOL!
Let me start with your easiest question: I am currently reading The Shack by William Young and The Last Campaign by Thurston Clarke. Both of these books are fascinating! Next on my list are A Thousand Splendid Suns and Water for Elephants.
The grading rubric for the Black History projects were sent home right before Spring Break, if I remember correctly. The projects were sent home the last week of school. They had been on display in the library.
As for nervousness about middle school, it is to be expected. Easy for me to say, right? All I can offer is to tell the students that middle school will be whatever they make of it. If they go in thinking they won't like it, they will find all of the little things that will prove them right. Conversely, if they go in looking for the great things, they will find them! It is a shame that the class is splitting up, but that doesn't mean there aren't new friends out there. After being together for two (or four or five) years, it is time to get to know new people. Even students who will be going to a school with old friends will find themselves pulled into new groups with new people. We learn something from every person we meet. Don't limit yourselves just to be comfortable. Those first few days of middle school may be a bit scary, but so were the first few days of elementary school. It is just hard to remember that far back.
I guess the one thing I would want students to remember is that it is okay to be scared, but we go anyway and make the most of where we are and what we have. I want my kids to go out there and shine, no matter what school they attend! Don't look for excuses; set the standard! I'll close with the phrase I probably said about 1,000 times to this group: "No matter where you go, remember who you are, and remember whose you are!"
Let me know if I can do anything to help with this transition!
Booo Lakers! Boston is gonna take it! They deserve the championship more, they work hard and not too pretty to play hard.
I agree 100%! Go Celtics!!
what does the recent state take over of the school system mean for our children? will the curriculum that you have worked so hard to teach be obsolete? what is your opinion?
Do you hear that coughing sound? It's the Lakers choking! GO CELTICS !!
What did I tell you?! Boston Celtics ROCK! Kevin Garnett is a ROCK STAR!
