It's Been Quite a Year

Some of you who have followed this blog know that I can get very contemplative at times and go on and on about little things. I am going to fight the urge to do that tonight. This isn't the time or place for me to start waxing philosophical! So I will try to keep this short and I will refrain from preaching!

It has been said that every person we meet changes our life in some way. Along that note, I want to thank each and every one person who touched my life this year. I also would like to thank those of you who trusted me with your children--from the 25 original Loopers who are now shining in middle school to the 23 who have entertained me thus far during this looping go-around. There is so much good in each person, if we only take the time to look for it!

In closing the year, I want to wish all readers a happy, hearty, and healthy 2009.
Happy New Year!

All I Want For Christmas is . . . .

Enjoy the holiday season and read about what our class really wants for Christmas! Students wrote persuasive letters to Santa to try and convince him that they deserve all of the items on their looooong wish lists! Click on the comments button below to read those letters and see what the hot items are this last shopping week!

First Week of December

It is December! Only a few more days of school until Christmas break. Where does the time go? Unbelievable!!

I just wanted to touch base and remind everyone about the quick book order. I apologize for only running it for a week, but with shipping issues, I want to be sure anything you purchase is back in time for the holidays. You can order online HERE. Remember our class name is: karraker The password is: bookorder

This week in class, the students are writing letters to Santa. They are asking Santa for a few items that they absolutely have to have! Of course it is a lesson in writing a persuasive paper, so students had to tell Santa why they deserve to be on the "Nice List" this year (or how they will get on the "Nice List" next year if this year is a lost cause!). We will add those here on the blog in a couple of weeks.

Please let me know what you are thinking about our party. I really am not good at that kind of thing. I hope your shopping is all going well! Have a great week!

Thanksgiving is Around the Corner!

I honestly don't know where time is going. Unbelievable! I hope you are all planning on coming to the book fair and chili supper tomorrow night. I'll be there working at the checkout, so stop by and say hi! And since time keeps slipping by, I have gone ahead and put the blog into full holiday mode. I hope you enjoy some of my favorite songs for the season, and please take part in the poll to the left.

We have started our first coached project this week. Students are writing to people in our community to learn about their jobs. We are writing all sorts of people! When the people (hopefully) write us back with their answers, we are going to tape an interview talk-show to share the information we learn! As that time approaches, I will let you know more!

I just received a gift card for dinner at Outback Steak House because of how hard you all worked for the school fundraiser. That doesn't really seem fair, does it? I wish I could take you guys out to eat with it, but then you wouldn't have much fun, would you?

And for those of you who accidentally lose the daily math assignments every week, I have posted the assignment sheet on the class wiki page. The link to that page is along the right side of this blog. Once at the wiki page, look along the left side for the "Daily Math Assignment" link. I hope that helps. I meant to put all of our work on that site, but forgot I had that capability! Go figure!

Well, as Thanksgiving is about two weeks away, take a moment in the comments section to share what you are most thankful for this year. I would love to hear from students, former students, and parents!

Thanks and have a great week!

It's November!

I trust that everyone is busy enjoying their extra hours today. I relished mine so much, I was still almost late for church this morning! If anyone has pictures of themselves in costume from the weekend, send them to me and I will post them here on the blog!

As you hopefully know, students do not report to school on Tuesday because of the election. So many of our schools are polling precincts, it is a safety issue to have so many people coming and going while students are present. I trust that everyone will go out and vote (if you have not already taken advantage of early voting.) Students will have a homework assignment for Tuesday that will involve them following the election returns. That will go home along with a detailed explanation tomorrow.

We will begin a coached project this week at school. As a part of the Paideia philosophy, coached projects are completed almost entirely at school, so hopefully parents won't have to stress out about it. We are going to write letters to community workers to learn about the jobs they do and their importance to our communities. Later on the students will dress up as their community worker and present their information. Depending on technology difficulties, I hope to have these projects digitally recorded. We shall see!

Anyhow, have a great day--it's beautiful outside and the Titans just won!--and a wonderful week! Don't forget to send in those costume pictures!

First Quarter is in the Books

I know, I know. Only old people talk about how quickly time flies, but it does, so I must be! To the students, May 2010 seems like it is an eternity away, but it scares me how quickly this first 9 weeks have passed. That means that 1/8 of our time together is over! So many of the students have already grown so much, I am sure I cannot even predict all that they will accomplish between now and then! And not that I am wishing time away, those of you, like me, who love the holidays might want to click HERE!

Anyhow, report cards came home (or should have) yesterday. Please look them over, and then sign and return when possible. If you have any questions, let me know. Also remember that book orders are due by this Friday. A link to online ordering is HERE. Class name is: karraker The password : bookorder

Have a good week!

It's Been Awhile!

So sorry for not updating this in the last couple of weeks. It seems as if everything has been on fast forward and I fell so far behind! Little by little I am getting back on top of things--but don't expect too much!!

I am looking forward to meeting with you all on Monday. I am trying to get a sample of your child's work together along with the results of the reading assessment and ThinkLink to share with you. I know that some of you are a bit concerned about some of the work I sent home this week, and I will go over those on Monday if you would like. Remember that 3rd grade is a lot different than 2nd. I am doing my best to get the students ready for TCAP, 4th grade, and middle school. Believe it or not, there is a method to my madness. The students have to learn to be resourceful and think about what they are learning. Many of the children want to ask for help without making an independent effort. It will not be in their best interest for this to remain a habit. As they get older, the things they learn will get more difficult. We want them to have the tools necessary to figure things out when it does get tough. I do not give them things that we have not talked about or things that they cannot do, so a little struggling can be a good thing.

Yesterday was chaotic to say the least, and so our "How-To Carve the Perfect Jack-o-lantern" activity was put on hold until today. I think they did a good job teaching me how! You can see the results of their work when you come in on Monday! Be prepared to be scared!! ;-)

Only one more day this week! Have a good weekend and I'll see (most of ) you Monday!

Fundraisers and Other Items of Note

Fundraising packets went home yesterday. Hopefully you got one. if not please let me know ASAP! I have two packets here at school and I'm not sure why. According to the video we watched, if your child has sold two items by this Friday, they can bring the order form in and get a free pen. The order forms will then come back home until the end of the sale on October 6.

Also, please remember that we collect "Box Tops for Education"off of General Mills brand food and products. Before you toss those boxes, check and see if you can clip the box top. For a list of items with the special tops, click here.

Book orders are also due by end of day next Tuesday. Click HERE to access the site online. our class user name is: karraker The password is: bookorder Not very creative, is it?

That is about it. Don't' forget you and your child can leave messages here online. Very soon, look for student work to be added here. To help make that go a little smoother, let your child practice typing at home. keyboarding skills will be very important for these students when they grow up! Let's start practicing now!

Have a good week!

Our First Seminar

Today is Patriot's Day--a day set aside to remember and honor the Americans who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. We had a seminar today that tied in with Patriot's Day. The students were given a copy of a poem that was written about the American flag. It was written after 9-11 and so it has many references to that tragic day. So the students talked about what they knew and we discussed how important the flag was right after all of that happened. I told them how it was such an important and unifying symbol for Americans. The students then worked with a partner to complete a seminar product. They were to pick any American flag throughout history and describe what it would have seen, felt, and said if it could do that. Some chose to be the flag on the Twin Towers, others picked the first flag sewn by Betsy Ross; we even had students chose the flag on the moon and one used during the Civil Rights Movement! I think the seminar went well! I hope your child talks with you about it tonight!

If you are interested, the poem we used is actually a song by Michael W. Smith called "There She Stands." Click HERE to hear it! I think it is a beautiful song. Enjoy!

A Personal Post

The weekend was a good one as my nephew celebrated his first birthday. He had a good time, and it was good to see so much family together for a positive reason. It was a lot of driving in a short amount of time, but I wouldn't have missed it for the world. I was very pleased to get back and hear that the class did so well with our guest teacher. Anyhow, I am including a couple of photos for friends and family to see. (Of course the theme of the party was St. Louis Cardinals baseball!) Yes, I am a bit biased, but I think he is a cute little baby! And he even loves me now! (About time, right?)
My school family will get a break from these personal entries for a while now. I promise! Thanks for indulging me!

Last Week of August

Where did the month go? I guess that is a sign of getting old!

Hopefully you read today's newsletter where I told you about the ThinkLink test the students will take on Thursday. These math and reading tests will help to identify areas of strength and needed improvement so we can prepare for the TCAP. I look forward to seeing how this test will help us reach our goals!

The agendas are still not in yet, but I would expect them any day. Once those are in, I will begin giving regular homework assignments. I have not done that yet, because I didn't want to start one procedure only to change once the agendas came in. I do hope you enjoyed reading with your child this weekend. I find that the reading selections that come home for the weekends allow you to see how well your child is reading a grade appropriate passage. If he/she could read it fluently, maybe you could help suggest that he/she try more challenging chapter books for independent reading. If your child was not fluent, you could have him/her read shorter passages to you until they sound more conversational.

I hope everyone has a great week and makes big plans for the 3 day weekend. Enjoy the rain!!

One of Those Days

Coming home today is our first newsletter and a note to parents. First of all, the newsletter is for you to keep at home. You will find information about what we will be studying this week along with some reminders and a few of my thoughts. On the back of the newsletter is a fun sheet that your child can complete. It is NOT homework or required. Then this week, stapled to the newsletter is a note from me about a class discussion we had in class today. If you need any information or have any questions or concerns, please contact me directly.

On the last post, a parent wanted to know how the parents felt about having a classroom directory in addition to the school-wide directory. Let me know what you think about that.

Also, I have been asked about supply list items. All year long my wish list contains mainly one item--Kleenexes! They are a constant need throughout the year. As our supply dwindles, I will put requests in the newsletter.

I guess that is about it for today. It was a long one, but we'll be back tomorrow, ready to go! (Hopefully I won't spill my coffee on myself tomorrow morning!)

PS--Thanks to Mrs. Sh for doing some cutting for me. I have a bit more to be done if anyone else would like to get some volunteer hours in. First come--first served!

A New Year and Our New Wiki Page

First of all, our first day is finished and it was a good one! We established a list of rules that we will continue to refine and practice. We also did a few introductory activities, and then we sat at dismissal forever! Please bear with us--dismissal will get better. It always does!

I have been looking for a way to make letters and worksheets available for you at home, and I think this Wiki page may just do the trick. I have added a link to the wiki page on the sidebar of this blog. When you go to the wiki page you will see a link to the pages that I have sent home. Click on the one you need and download it to your own computer. Hopefully this will help on those occasions when things become misplaced!

Have a good afternoon and get ready for our first full day tomorrow!

August? Already???

Although I have been back at school for several days as of late, tomorrow is my first "official" day back. I have my new class roster of 24 students, and let me assure you that they have BIG shoes to fill. My former loopers set quite a standard and left a legacy for this new group to uphold. I have no doubt that my new crew will be great, and I am looking forward to the next two years. All of that begins tomorrow for me and Monday for you all!

So to both former and new loopers, thanks for visiting the blog! Please leave a comment and send all of your friends good luck for the first day of school!

Back in the Full Swing. . .almost

My summer is just about over. Most of you have about one more week before the alarm must be set for the crack of dawn. I hope you enjoy that time, because the alarm plays no favorites!

In a past post, someone asked about the school supply list. Click HERE for a link to the school's lists. I will tell you that my students do not need to bring the zip-loc bags. Also the color of folders is not important to me. If your child prefers colored pencils to crayons, that is fine. I really don't get too concerned with the specifics. (A good handheld pencil sharpener with cover can be invaluable, though!) Parents know generally what a child needs for school; use this list as a guide, not necessarily a checklist. If something specific comes up, I will let you all know, but there will be more important things in our classroom than checking on everyone's gluesticks and crayon boxes. I will add that an item which will be on our wish list all year is boxes of Kleenexes.

Don't forget: This weekend is the Tax-Free Holiday. Go out there and save your 9%! Also note that the dress code will be enforced from day one. Our shirt colors are still blue, white, red, pink, and yellow. Be sure to have a belt or two!

Hopefully you all received the letter about our Meet the Teacher Night next Thursday evening. I hope that all old and new students can come by and visit for a minute or two. Have a good weekend and I'll see you very soon!

Finally. . . Summer Vacation

Summer school has ended and I have been able to hit the road and relax a bit. What am I doing? Spoiling my little nephew, of course! He is a lot of fun. As you can see in the video, he is quite a fan of watermelon.

He is nearly walking, but let me tell you he has got crawling down pat! Here I caught him crawling out of his play area. He gets beyond his boundary and then stops to smile at me, as if saying "I can do whatever I want. Just try to stop me!" And just look at all of those curls! (Please accept my apologies for my high pitched baby voice in both videos. I can't help myself!)

Kaleb is very close to walking. He will often get into a yoga pose in an attempt to find his balance. He finds this position funny.

Okay--thanks for indulging me. I have one more video to share. He is pulling up balancing very well, but is just too scared to take that first step. Here he was practicing climbing up using his dear auntie as a ladder!

So, that is about it for me. In just a few short weeks we'll all be back at school and into the daily grind. Enjoy what's left of your summer--I plan to!!

UPDATE: Our trip to the beach this afternoon was shortened due to the weather, but look at these beautiful shots of the storm clouds that came in!

Friday, July 4, 2008

I hope that everyone enjoys this wonderful day of food, family, fireworks, and freedom! We are all so blessed, and more often than not, we take that for granted. I think about how difficult it must have been for those men in 1776 to take that leap of faith. Although they knew the struggle and sacrifice that they would face, they could have only dreamed about what a great country they would leave to us 232 years later. We do have a lot of things wrong with the country today, but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Even with the problems, the freedoms we have as Americans--including free speech and religion--are true gifts. So, before you eat that burger or hot dog today, take a moment and give thanks for the great gift of being an American!

will finally and powerfully prevail."---Thomas Paine

Checking In

As I sit here watching my beloved Cardinals beating up the Red Sox, I figured I needed to check in just in case anyone is out there reading. My summer so far has been less than exciting. Teaching summer school has been more than I anticipated. It definitely makes me appreciate Jones and the teachers, parents, and administration we have there. That's all I am going to say about that.

I am starting to get excited about my big trip that is coming soon. Departure is in just over two weeks! THAT is when my summer vacation will begin! Two weeks without any responsibilities or expectations, plus the opportunity to see Kaleb and sit by the pool or ocean all day long! Additionally, I will definitely get a lot of reading done! How can that be beat? Maybe I'll decide to stay and not come back!! Okay, not really. I need my winter weather and at least the CHANCE of snow.

In a previous post, someone asked me about my summer reading. First of all, I hope that all of my former and new students are reading this summer! Secondly, for the adults reading this, I highly recommend The Shack by William Young. I wasn't sure going into it if I would like the whole premise, but it is truly a life altering book. I plan to reread it again this summer. If you want more information about it, e-mail me. I would love to talk about it!

That's it. Go out there and have some fun! Happy reading!

District Changes

If you have happened to see the news or read a newspaper over the last few days, I am sure you have heard that the state Department of Education is in the process of taking over Metro schools. This is happening because our district has failed to make the needed progress toward fulfilling No Child Left Behind. Let me start out by saying that our school has met the requirements, but as we are a part of the district, we fall under the take-over as well.

I am attempting to find out as much information as I can so that you know what is going on. Once I hear back from those in the know, I will let you know what this means for our school. All I know right now is that the standards and curriculum will be adjusted. I don't really know what that will look like, because our district standards were based on the state standards. In my opinion, for what that is worth, adjusting the standards is not necessarily a bad thing. Our district standards are/were very thorough, which made it difficult to cover all standards with the time and attention needed. If the list of standards were pared down to a manageable list of important and crucial skills, I would not complain. You hopefully know by now, that I would rather teach those key standards in depth so that my students truly understand them, than briefly touch the surface of numerous, important, but not as crucial skills. Does that make sense? If that is where we are headed, count me in!

Now for the part that has me a bit concerned. We received a press release today that stated staff transfers will be made so that people are placed where they are needed most. I assume that holds mainly for administrative positions and people at the Board, but I don't know. No, I am not afraid that I am going anywhere--no one else would want me anyway! What I do fear is the repercussions that arise when people are involuntarily shifted to a new job. Bad feelings tend to trickle down.

Anyhow, that is all I know at this time. As I do learn more, I will update here on the blog. All I can say is it is not yet time to start worrying. So, get out there and enjoy the summer!

Here is the latest update--an explanation from Ms. Greer:
It has been no secret that the state has been revamping all of the state standards; therefore, we knew Metro standards would have to change in order to address the state changes. We are required to teach state standards. Prior to now the Metro standards had always encompassed the state standards so we will use whatever the state says we will use from this point forward.

Thanks to Ms. Greer for taking the time to comment!

Summer Comes Early!

Well, I am back from the St. Louis area and getting ready to start up summer school. I was able to see Kaleb for a few days, and for the record he is not so fond of his favorite aunt. He was away from his momma and daddy for the first time and he would abide no one except his grandpa (and Oliver), which was good news for Grandpa and no one else. He better grow out of this phase, or else!!

I have had about enough of this heat already, and summer hasn't even started yet! Not a good omen, is it? To top it all off, I am now the "proud" owner of a huge repair bill for air conditioner issues. I love autumn and winter so much!!

If anyone is out there, share with me your great, keep-cool summer plans. I would love to hear from you all.

Take care and behave!

Happy Summer and Beyond!

Here it is the first weekend of summer, and I am getting ready to pack and hit the road, but I wanted to be sure and post a message to all of my (former) students. First of all, thank you so much for the dedication of a chair in my name at the new teacher center. It is a very generous tribute and it makes me proud to know that you care that much! Also thank you for the flowers, cards, e-mails, and other things that I count as blessings. I have to say that the many heartfelt letters and notes I got mean the world to me, and I thank you for them!

We had two great years together; we've shared some wonderful things and helped each other through some difficult times, but we made it through together as a family. As I was sorting your files to go off to your new schools, it made me sad to see that the 25 of you will now be split up among ten different schools. Each of those schools will be lucky to have you, and I hope you plug yourselves into a group of friends that is positive, supportive, and looking out for your best interests.

I hope you are enjoying the notebooks. My wish for them is that you always have something to look to that will remind you that you are an awesome person with friends who care. The end of elementary school does not change that. My job with you is done, but that does not mean I am through with you! I want to hear from you and know how you are doing. I fully expect to run all over town eight years from now attending 25 graduations and parties! And, Lord willing, I'll be at every one that I am invited to!

Just because you are no longer in my class, don't think you are off the hook! You will always be a Looper! Check in here from time to time and see what we are up to. I have to break in a whole new group of 24 in just a few months. Do you have any advice for me?

Well, go one and enjoy your summer. Read a book or two, enjoy the weather and vacation, and get ready to buckle down and show your new schools what a Jones Looper is capable of achieving! (Also, if you did not get your DVD on the last day, you will get one. I will make sure you all have a copy.)

Best wishes today and always!

A Tribute to Jones

As your days as a student or parent at Jones dwindle, I would like for you to take a moment or two and think about what this school has meant to you. Please click on the comment button below and share your thoughts. I would love to read about those things you will miss most. Please take a minute and share with us all! Thanks. It's almost . . .

Field Day

A note came home today asking for your input and help with lunch on Field Day. Please let me know if you have any ideas. With the LCO coming up, I don't really want to add more to my to-do list. I would be fine with having a simple picnic lunch, but I will be happy to hand it all off to a group of willing parents. Any help you would like to offer, I will gladly accept. Thanks!

Good for the Soul

As I was sitting at home indoors on a beautiful Saturday enjoying a lovely sinus infection, I heard a beep letting me know that I had received a new e-mail message. I had to share with you the photo I got that just made my day. Yes, I have admitted before that I am less than impartial when it comes to my nephew, but I would dare anyone to see this picture and not break out into a big smile! I may be sneezing, coughing, and fighting the sinuses, but at least now my heart is warm! Thanks for indulging and letting me share!

1st Anniversary

Can you believe that this blog is one year old today? It feels like I have been doing it forever. I know I only have a few faithful readers, but I enjoy writing for the blog. It is kind of cathartic for me. Students have not been as big a part as I imagined, but that can be a goal for the future.

TCAP testing is going well. I have been immensely impressed with the effort the class has put into the tests. It is not easy sitting there trying to focus and think hard for two hours, but they are doing it! I am sure they have been exhausted at home. We have two days left and then it is over for another year.

Don't forget the LCO meeting one week from today. Mrs. Ward and I plan to send a note home tomorrow. Look for it!

Well, thanks for checking in and reading the blog over the past year. I hope that I will be able to keep it going so that all of my students can come back and check in, even after they hit the doors of middle school. Thanks again and have a great week!

TCAP is a-Comin'

We are less than a week away from TCAP testing. We began talking about test taking strategies in class today, so hopefully we will be calm enough and prepared enough to actually show what we know. The students signed a pledge today stating that they would do their best. I will send those pledge cards home with them on Monday to help remind them what they can do to be ready. My intentions are not to make too big of a deal out of the tests, but I do want the students to take them very seriously and try their very best.

The scary thing to me is that once TCAP are over, our two year experiment will almost be over. We have had many ups and a few downs, and I'd like to think that we have all learned a lot. I haven't been perfect, but you have all accepted me and the rest of our school family with open arms. I know that the LCO will help cement the great relationships that have developed over the past 2-5 years. There are a couple of relationships I would like for us to really focus on over these last few weeks. I would love to put together a packet of letters from the students for Mrs. Ward, and for any other teacher they may have had while at Jones. Parents, if you would like to do this as well, you are more than welcome to join us.

If you have any questions about TCAP or anything else, please do not hesitate to contact me! Thanks. (And please remember that we are in need of photo album pages that would fit in a three ring binder.)

Greetings From North Carolina!

We made it--safe and sound!

Do you remember a few weeks back when we learned about the different time zones? Well, here in North Carolina, I am an hour ahead of Nashville. So when you were just crawling out of bed this morning, I was already sitting in the first session of the Paideia conference! But then at night, I have to wait until 11:00 to watch the news! Think about this--let's say you are a fan of American Idol and it comes on television at 7:00 in Nashville. That would be 8:00 out here! If your bedtime is 8:30 and you moved to Chapel Hill, you would only get to watch the first 30 minutes of Idol! Wow--that's rough!

I hope you are all having a great week and doing your best. I am learning a lot of really good things and I hope to share much of it with you before the end of the year! It is so exciting to get to be the "student" every now and then. Many of you might not believe that, but it is true!

So, today was the walking tour. How did it go? I would love to hear from some of you here on the blog. Let me know what you learned and what you liked best. I am sorry that I wasn't able to be there with you!

Don't forget that the LCO payments of $10 are due on Monday! Also report cards will come home Monday. Have a good Friday and an awesome weekend. Come in Monday ready to make the final push toward TCAP!

Be good to each other!

Happy Easter! Happy Spring!

I am sure that with everyone out enjoying Spring Break, I am here talking to myself. That's okay--it's kind of like being in the classroom. I hope that everyone is having a great time. I hope that you all enjoyed the return of the rubber duckies for Easter. I had gotten several sweet complaints that I had not been giving those out this year. I never imagined that you would want the same gift both years. Boy, did I learn. If I loop again, I will definitely remember that one!

Belmont almost beat Duke a few moments ago, and it would have been an amazing upset. As hard as it is to admit (as a Lipscomb alum--Go Bison!), I was rooting for Rick Byrd and the Bruins, but they let it slip out of their hands at the last second--actually the last four seconds. But it just goes to show you that underdogs can make a big difference. Always give your best effort--you never know what you might accomplish. Impressive job!

Just a few reminders. . . .

  1. Students are out of school Monday. (Not me--I'll be there working hard.)
  2. I will be out of school Wednesday-Friday attending the Paideia conference in Chapel Hill, NC. I trust that there will NOT be the problems we experienced last time I was out.
  3. The third installment payment for the LCO is due the following Monday (March 31). The payment due is $10.
  4. TCAP tests will be given around the second and third weeks of April. When I have specific dates, I will let you know.
  5. The Tax-Free Shopping Weekend was moved from this weekend to April 25-27th. Students will have SSA next year, so you can get a little bit of early shopping done. For more information on the tax-free holiday, Click Here.
  6. Students might be attending a field trip next week with the other fourth graders. I am a bit out of the loop about details, but will see that you get the information on Tuesday if they go ahead with the trip. The cost will be around $2.
  7. Don't forget the MANDATORY Parent Meeting about the LCO on Wednesday, April 16, at 5:00 in the library. We did send a preliminary shopping list home last week.
  8. I sent home a note last week requesting photo album inserts that will fit inside a three ring binder. If you have any extras around the house or know someone who can get some, I would greatly appreciate it. I could use just about as many as we can get. I am a beggar, so I am not picky about what you may send in--I'll take the sticky sheets or pockets, or whatever you might have.

Well, that's it. I've got to go walk Oliver and watch some more basketball. Happy first day of Spring, and have a great Easter. Travel safely, and know that you will only have to see me once next week. Lucky you!

In closing, even though I haven't been able to go and visit him this week, :-( I will share an Easter photo of my nephew with you. I KNOW I am prejudiced, but I think he is just the cutest little thing!

Spring Break is Here (Almost!)

Hello all. This week wraps up many things and leads us straight into Spring Break. Following this week, I have a feeling that the rest of the school year will pass in a flash! We will be down to the final nine weeks of elementary school. I bet it feels like yesterday you dropped your child off in kindergarten.

As we try to close out the year and elementary school in general on a bright note, I will need your help to hold this class to the high standards we have had since the beginning. I expect the last day to be just as good, if not better than, day number one. That means we treat each other, substitutes, teachers, and ourselves with respect that is due. I'll leave it at that or I will get on another soapbox and be here all night typing.

This Wednesday brings the field trip that Mrs. Moradian organized for us. Since most of our class will be going, I will be a chaperone. It should be interesting. Along the same thought, I hope you are saving the evening of April 16 for our meeting about the LCO. It is mandatory, so please save that date now!

If I haven't said so already, let me tell you what an awesome job your children and all fourth graders did Thursday night. I was so impressed. A big "thank you" goes out to Mrs. Alley, Ms. Bell, Ms. Morris, and Mr. Thompson for the hard work they put into making the program a big success. I didn't do anything but show up and receive the credit for my amazing students! That credit is all theirs!

Well, hopefully this week will pass quickly so you can get started on your Spring Break vacations. I hope that you have safe travels and a restful week. Have a great Easter, and come back on the 25th prepared for the final push toward TCAP and the end of fourth grade.

Be good to each other!

LATEST UPDATE

It seems as if I am singing you the same song I did back in December. Once again the pajama day Ms. Greer had scheduled for tomorrow was on the verge of being cancelled. BUT, it goes on as scheduled!

A second note I need to share with you is the fact that some food out of our students' lunches have recently been pilfered during the school day. I was not aware of the things taken a few weeks ago, but yesterday we had at least three lunches that had been gone through. Beginning today students will bring their lunches into the room first thing in the morning. That will not catch the thief, but it will prevent our class from being victimized.

Thanks for understanding and working with us as we try to end our year on a positive note! I hope to see you tonight at Paideia Night!

So Many Things I Forgot To Share

Okay, it must be that I am getting older, because it seems that I left so much out of this week's newsletter. What in the world was I thinking? Anyway, here is the new, up-dated scoop!

  1. This Thursday is still Paideia Night. If you made reservations for the light dinner and sessions, make sure you are here in time for that. Dinner is at 5:30; sessions begin at 6:15ish. If you are just coming for the 4th grade program, be here no later than 6:45. Students are to be in costume and sitting in their spots on the risers around 6:50.
  2. Ms. Greer has announced that in honor of Read Me Week and Dr. Seuss' 104th birthday, she has rescheduled our pajama day for THIS Friday! Yes, that means your child can come to school in his/her favorite pjs. Our homeroom can also bring pillows and such, but you might want to check with your child's reading teacher to see what they have planned.
  3. This weekend is my least favorite of the whole year, and maybe that is why I tried to forget about it. Before you go to bed Saturday night, remember to set your clocks ahead one hour or else you'll show up late for church Sunday morning! How embarrassing would that be? Hopefully we'll never find out. But, alas, it is that time to grudgingly give up that precious hour of sleep. I like the "fall back" weekend so much better!
  4. I think that may be it. I am including a link HERE for the legacy letters. PLEASE try to get those to me before Spring Break. Remember how nice I was about not needing them right away? Well, it is getting to the point where I am going to bug you every week!

Well, I hope to see you Thursday night! Have a great week.

BIG Week

As the weeks pass by, quicker and quicker it seems, we have so much yet to accomplish. This week is a big one for us. Beginning tomorrow morning students will present themselves as the famous African Americans the researched. I sent a note home last week letting you know what day your child would present. Students whose last names are A-G will present Monday, H-M go on Tuesday, and P-T on Wednesday. On the given day, the students are to come to school in costume, but don't forget to bring SSA to change into later. Parents are invited to join us and watch. If you can't make it, don't worry; I plan on taking plenty of pictures. A few students who do well on their presentations will get a chance to present again during the program Thursday night.

Speaking of Thursday, I hope you are planning on attending. Look for information to come home tomorrow. You will have an opportunity to register for sessions covering a variety of topics. The evening will end with the fourth grade program in the auditorium. The students have been working with Mrs. Alley to learn songs about African American history. Students are asked to come dressed as their famous person for the program.

Book orders are due this Friday. Don't forget you can order online HERE. (class: karraker password: bookorder)

This Friday also marks the deadline for making the second installment toward the LCO. This payment is $10; checks can be made out to Jones Paideia. Can you believe we are only eleven weeks away? It will be here before we know it. After Spring Break we will be sending home packing recommendations and final paperwork. We will also have another parent meeting to go over last minute questions. Stay tuned.

Have a good week, and I hope to see you Thursday if not earlier!

A Closer Look at Graphic Novels

Today we have a guest post from Mrs. Sharp. I hope this helps.

One of the most often heard questions that I receive each day in the Jones Paideia Library is “where are the graphic novels?” Graphic Novels are attracting the attention of students in every grade level, both girls and boys. This is quite exciting as students discover what lies between the pages of each book!

Here is the scoop on Graphic Novels! Graphic Novels are just another format to engage children in the enjoyment of a story, such as audio books. They are not a genre in themselves. As children, we thought of these graphically engaging books as comic books. However, these “comic books” have now been turned into novels. One no longer has to wait for the next issue to arrive before finding out what happens in the story. The story has resolve!

As students have become more interested in these novels, it leads us as educators and parents to question the benefits of this format. After some investigation I was pleased to find this article on the Diamond Comics Website titled, “How Comics Can Reach Reluctant Readers.” It stated, “comics use the combination of visuals and text to tell a complete story, thereby increasing a student’s visual literacy and acting as an assistive device. Far from being easier to read, though, comics are actually just as challenging as traditional text: the student is engaging in higher-level reading skills because he or she must be able understand the sequencing of each panel while following the text and art at the same time.” I found this interesting, that not only are graphic novels just as challenging as traditional text, but the student has to engage in higher-level reading skills to fully understand the story.

There are different graphic novels geared toward children and adults of all ages. The reading levels and the interest level can vary. In our library we have graphic biographies, fiction and historical non-fiction graphic novels, and of course the more traditionally thought of superhero graphic novels. Our graphic novels are appropriate for readers starting in second grade and up. If you are searching for this format in your local public library, take the time to review your child’s choice as they can vary in their content and age appropriateness.

Graphic novels are another great format for students to enjoy. As a library media specialist I am always searching for ways to engage your child in the enjoyment of reading. The addition of Graphic Novels to the Jones Paideia Library seems to be one of the motivating factors in bringing the children through the door!

Ms. K Has Left the Building--well, sort of

Here lately it seems as if I have been out of the classroom so much--at least more than I typically am. The most recent two days I was out, I was actually in the building working on something for the school. Now here is the news that will make your children jump for joy! They will think it is Christmas all over again. This coming Monday I am to report for jury duty, which means I will be out of the classroom for several days, possibly the whole week. I can almost hear their shouts of jubilation right now.

Needless to say, I could use your help next week. Please remind the class that their behavior and effort should be as good if not better than normal. This is an amazing class and I could sing their praises all day long, but I know the temptations that arise when a substitute teacher is in the room. I have been the student and the substitute, so believe me, I know.

What next week holds (with or without me):

  1. Midterms will come home Monday. Please sign and return the cover sheet.
  2. Permission slips for the symphony trip on February 19 are due back ASAP. There is no cost for this trip, but students will need to bring a sack lunch that day. If you need a sack lunch from the cafeteria, please let the substitute know right away.
  3. Thursday is the 2nd annual Valentine’s Day Non-party. (We are allowed only two parties a year and our class has parties at Christmas and the end of the year.) Mrs. Ward will be hosting our Non-party with her students. If you would like to send in cupcakes and/or juice boxes, please contact Mrs. Ward ( 291-6382 x 1107 or ashley.ward@mnps.org ). She will be coordinating everything and making sure there is enough for our classes. If you are sending in Valentines, please try to send one for your child’s reading buddy and maybe for Mrs. Ward, too, to thank her for allowing us to have the Non-party.
  4. No school on Monday, February 18 for Presidents’ Day.
  5. Remember to bring a lunch on Tuesday, February 19.
  6. Black history projects are due Friday, February 22 and presentations will be that following week. I will send home information as to what day your child will go so you can try to attend.
  7. The second LCO payment ($10) is due no later than February 29.

I will be back in the classroom as soon possible. I am grateful that you are so understanding and supportive. Please trust that all of these absences of late have been out of my control. I’ll make it up to you by keeping your children for two nights in May! Deal?

Have a good week and try not to miss me too much, because I will be back.
(Look for a post about graphic novels next week.)

P.S. Here is an interview with my former student and current NBA rookie, Brandan Wright. It goes to show you that you can be a professional athlete making millions of dollars and still be a good, humble person. I am very proud of Brandan and all that he has accomplished and will achieve in his life. He is a role model you can look up to who actually walked the same hallways you do today!

It's February!

Well, I hope whatever this flu bug is that is going around misses you and your family. We had several teachers and students out today, and I think there might be even more tomorrow! We definitely missed Mrs. Ward and Ms. Hunt today. I was so lonely without my other musketeers (or are they stooges?)! Please do your best to wash your hands as much as possible to try and prevent the onset of this illness.

I have some news to make about next week. Last year we had a "Non Party" for Valentine's Day. As I wrote in the newsletter, I am not sure that we are going to get to have a "Non Party" this year. I do not know if I will be at school or not, and so I am hesitant to schedule a "Non Party" for a substitute teacher. What I will suggest is that if you were planning on sending in items for the students, have enough for everyone. Then at the end of the day, whether I am there or not, the students can pass out their valentines and goodies and then pack up for home. If I am able to be at school that day, we can do something a little more elaborate and have a small "Non Party." What do you think? Let me know. Thanks!

Have a good, warm, and hopefully healthy week!

Congrats Mrs. Ward!!

It is official!!

Mrs. Ward has been honored by being selected Jones Paideia's

Teacher of the Year!

Congratulations!!

All of the teachers were asked to choose one experienced teacher in our building who best serves the children, and Mrs. Ward was that person this year! We are all very proud of her! She takes over from Ms. Bell who won last year. I know that all of my students love Mrs. Ward, and so I wanted to be sure you all knew about this great honor. I am very lucky to work with such an outstanding teacher each day, and your children will forever be blessed by their time with her! This is an honor well deserved!

Big Changes

I am sure that most of you have either read or seen the news that our district is in the midst of change. I am not sure how I feel about everything that has happened lately, but I am not about to get into the name-calling and finger-pointing I have seen in the newspaper comments and editorials. Many people seem to think one person, one board member, one administrator, or whomever can accept all the blame for any given problem. Things just don't work that way in real life, as easy as it may be to jump on a bandwagon.

For one, I see our school and class as an exception to many of the problems and complaints throughout the district. We have parents who are invested and involved in the lives of their children. (Some of you feel you are too involved, but consider the alternative.) Parents who care make choices that are in the best interest of their children. You have chosen our school as the best fit for your child. Some of you drive all over town to get your children to school each day. (I will refrain from commenting on tardies at this time! ;-) ) I truly believe that if more parents were like you, teachers, administrators, and schools would have no other choice than to get themselves into gear. I'll step off of my soapbox now.

I just have to point out the fact that the Patriots are headed to the Super Bowl. As much as that tears up a couple of my students, it is amazing to see history being made. Sorry Bubblez! I am disappointed that Brett Favre is done for the season. We agree on that!

Announcements:
  • No school tomorrow--Martin Luther King Jr. Day If you are headed for the parade, dress warmly!
  • Don't forget that the first installment payment for the LCO is due no later than January 31.
  • Book orders are due this Wednesday. You can order online by clicking HERE. Remember that our class username is: karraker and the password is: bookorder.
  • Math problem solving assessment is this week.
  • Little Bear basketball at TSU is coming up soon. Look for more information.

When Does it Slow Down?

I always thought that after Christmas and the other holidays passed, things slow back down, yet I don't feel as if that is happening. How sad is it to admit that I longingly look at the extended weather forecast each day? Shame on me! I guess the drudgery of the spring semester has hit early. I will do my best not to take it out on the children. (Well, at least not on most of them. Some deserve it, don't you think?)

I'll stop moping for a bit to share a few items of note with you. Tomorrow, January 15, students will come home with the School Mall postcard books. We did this last year, so it might look familiar to you. Just fill in the addresses of people who might shop online. Our school receives a percentage of total purchases from numerous online stores when people register with this program. It is a simple, FREE way of earning money for Jones.

Report cards came home today. Please review those, sign them, and send them back to school. If you have questions, concerns, comments, etc please don't hesitate to contact me.

On today's newsletter, I included a great game in the "Website of the Week" section. I have also added it to the blog in the Favorites section. Maybe next week I'll share the website with cheats showing how to beat each level (not that I have used it or anything)! I also hope you enjoy the music link on the blog. I have asked the students to submit songs, but have not yet gotten much response. Do you have any favorites you would like me to add to the playlist? Finetune is a great website. You might want to check it out!

The response for the LCO was phenomenal! Thank you so much for getting the confirmation notes in. Between the two classes, we have 42 students attending! I just have a feeling that this will be an awesome way to spend our last few days of elementary school. Thank you so much for allowing your child to participate and share this time with Mrs. Ward and me! (And speaking of the fabulous Mrs. Ward, you might want to visit her blog and "encourage" [harass] her to update it more often!)

Don't forget that next Monday is a holiday honoring Dr. King.

It seems like there is something else I am supposed to mention. It will come to me later, I'm sure. I've given you plenty for now. Have a great week!

Predictions for 2008!

We are back to school and the work has already begun! The students were asked to think about what might happen in this new year to them, our communities, and our world. Click on the comments button below to see what our fourth graders predict for 2008. You won't believe what 2008 might hold!

It's 2008!

We made it. Albeit a little bit tired today, I was very happy to see 2007 turn over to a new and hopefully better year! Last year was a rough one in many respects, but filled with numerous blessings, too. I really shouldn't and can't complain too much. Although my family has had some health issues, we were all able to be together for a good Christmas. And to think that at this time last year, we had no idea that there would be one more joining us for Christmas this year. I think it is safe to say that Kaleb had a good Christmas and made all of ours brighter! Here are a few more photos of the guest(s) of honor. (Thanks to new-mommy Mrs. Cooper for the Santa hat!)

Oliver just had to show off his holiday attire! He was initially very jealous; he would whimper and cry every time I was holding the baby, but eventually he was able to sniff, smell, and meet Kaleb and so I think they will be good buddies.

Anyhow, we will back in the final stretch of things all too soon. Just a few school reminders--next Friday is the LCO commitment date. Mrs. Ward and I are asking for parents to decide whether or not their child will participate in May. A note will come home with your child on Tuesday. Look for it. Other than that, enjoy this last week. Don't think about school one bit, and get as much out of these last few days as you can.

Happy 2008!
